AI Object
An AI Object is the persistent governed object representing an AI use, system, application, model, agent, workflow or other recognized AI implementation an organization decides to govern.
Executive Summary
An AI Object identifies the subject of governance: the AI implementation or use that the organization recognizes, gives a defined scope and maintains over time. It connects that subject to organizational context, an accountable Owner, review, decisions and follow-up.
AI Object is what is governed; Governance Record preserves governance history. The object maintains its identity and current context. Governance Records preserve relevant reviews, decisions, actions and material changes concerning it.
Persistence across the governed lifecycle
Persistence means the organization can continue to recognize the same governed subject over time. An AI Object is not a temporary observation, a single execution or a snapshot of a tool. Its identity connects governance work as context, ownership and lifecycle state change.
A change in model, version, deployment or Owner does not necessarily create a new AI Object. Review should establish whether the organization still recognizes the same governed subject or whether a materially different purpose or scope calls for a separate object. Persistence does not mean every attribute stays fixed.
What can be an AI Object?
AI Object is an umbrella for the AI subjects an organization chooses to govern. The appropriate unit depends on the implementation, its business purpose and the scope of accountability and review. Recognizing a type alone does not establish that an implementation has been qualified for governance.
- AI use: a recognized use of AI in an organizational context.
- System or application: an AI system or AI-enabled application with a defined governed scope.
- Model: a model the organization recognizes as a subject of governance.
- Agent: an AI agent governed within the same object model, with human accountability and review appropriate to its purpose and actions.
- Workflow: an AI-enabled workflow the organization decides to govern as a defined unit.
- Other recognized AI implementation: a subject that fits the organization’s governance scope even as implementation forms evolve.
Observation and AI Item precede qualification
An Observation is a discovered signal or source input about potential AI. An AI Item brings potential AI into qualification so people can determine what it represents and whether it should enter governance. Neither is automatically a governed AI Object.
Qualification can connect new information to an existing AI Object or recognize a new one. Several observations can concern the same object; repeated discovery should not be confused with a new governed identity.
The functional relationship is Observation → AI Item → AI Object → Owner → Review/Decision → Actions → Governance Record. It connects discovery and qualification to accountability, governance work and retained history.
AI Object, asset, system and use case
An AI asset can be an artifact, output or subject of asset management. Asset ownership or classification alone does not establish the accountable Owner or governed scope of an AI Object.
An AI system is one possible implementation that can be governed as an AI Object. AI Object is broader: it can also represent an application, model, agent, workflow or recognized AI use.
An AI use case describes a business purpose or intended use. That context helps define an AI Object, and a recognized use can itself be the governed unit. A use-case label alone does not identify every implementation involved or establish its governance status.
The organization should make the governed boundary clear enough to identify the subject, its purpose, where it is used and who is accountable. A model, application and agent may be related without being interchangeable subjects of governance.
Ownership, review and decisions
The Owner is the person accountable for governance of the AI Object. Ownership gives review questions, decisions and follow-up an organizational destination. Technical administration, procurement or supplying the technology does not by itself establish this accountability.
A Reviewer provides validation or challenge in a relevant review; being a Reviewer does not make that person the Owner. Decisions and resulting Actions remain connected to the subject being governed.
Ownership and review should remain current as purpose, scope, data, model, vendor or organizational context changes. Material changes can require renewed review, follow-up or a decision about continued use or retirement.
AI Object and Governance Record
The AI Object is what is governed. The Governance Record preserves governance history. A Governance Record is the durable record of relevant governance activity concerning the object, including what was reviewed, decided, done or materially changed.
Current object context and historical governance activity serve different purposes. Updating the current Owner or lifecycle state does not replace the history of how that state was reached. An object can be associated with multiple Governance Records over its lifecycle.
A common model as AI implementations evolve
New forms of AI implementation can be considered within this same governance model when the organization recognizes them as subjects to govern. The durable principles remain defined scope, persistent identity, accountable ownership, appropriate review and retained governance history.
An Agent belongs within this common model. Future implementation forms do not require a separate governance universe. This conceptual extensibility does not imply support for a particular protocol, integration or future product capability.
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI Object?
An AI Object is the persistent governed object representing an AI use, system, application, model, agent, workflow or other recognized AI implementation an organization decides to govern.
Is every Observation or AI Item an AI Object?
No. Observations and AI Items are inputs to qualification. The organization determines whether they concern an existing AI Object, represent a new governed subject or do not enter governance.
Can an Agent be an AI Object?
Yes. An Agent can be governed within the same AI Object model, with an accountable human Owner and review appropriate to its purpose and actions.
Is an AI Object a Governance Record?
No. The AI Object is what is governed. A Governance Record preserves relevant governance history concerning that object.
Does an AI Object remain the same when its Owner changes?
An ownership change does not by itself create a new governed subject. The object can retain its identity while accountability and governance context are updated and relevant history is preserved.
